The Meaning behind the Name
Macho means “vain men” and Mucho means “many” so there goes the term, “many vain men”.
Where it All Began
The barber salon was established in Davao and General Santos City in 2012. Right now, they have 10 branches all over the Philippines and some of them are franchises of the brand. Last 2015, Macho Mucho was voted as the Number One Salon for Men in Davao City and they won the “Best Concept” award at the US Embassy Go Negosyo’s Young Entrepreneur Development Workshop.
Perhaps the number one selling point of this barber salon is that it is able to meet the needs and preferences of the modern market by providing them with hair grooming services that they actually want.
Who Owns Macho Mucho?
Macho Mucho is owned by the Layco siblings. Ralph Layco is in charge of the Marketing functions of the barber salon chain while Kaye Layco, an Industrial Engineering graduate is in-charge of operations. The vision of the siblings is to add creativity and innovation in the barber shop business.
They want to level up the ordinary barber shop and turn it into something that will really suit the needs of the modern-day men. What they want male customers to feel is that when they enter their establishment, it’s like they’re in the right place where it’s okay to request for a service that would really upgrade their look without feeling any awkwardness or shame. The best part, is that they are served just what they’re looking for.
Concept and Design
According to Ralph, the place resembles a loft or sort of apartment in New York City. It’s very masculine when you enter with all the brick walls, no frills surroundings, very minimalist but doesn’t lack in style and comfort.
Their Cdo branch is dubbed as the best-looking branch of Macho Mucho so far and Kagay-anons are very delighted to hear that.
This barber salon has a unique ambiance that sets it apart from others, it’s like a haven for the modern men of Cagayan de Oro.
Work Culture
Their oldest employee is a barber who’s been with them for 7 years. I was able to talk to one of their employees, Ms. Grace who’s been with Macho Mucho for 4 years already.
When asked what made her stay, she revealed that it was the “kind owners” that made her stay that long. The owners treated her and other employees well which is why she lasted for 4 years. Aside from that, she also said that employees were given good benefits and incentives when they performed well. This is another reason why many stay motivated and last long.
It is also included in their work culture to settle disputes quickly. Every day before work, they have what she calls as a “pep talk” wherein they update each other regarding their issues and how they can improve their work. These early-morning discussions helped them keep a healthy working relationship thus keeping the barber salon in good shape. The employees have no time for trivial things and everybody’s happy in the work place. This in turn is one of the biggest secrets to the longevity of Macho Mucho.
Ralph stated in our interview that it is really true that “if you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers”.

Macho Mucho has skilled barbers who are able to provide the following hair grooming services; haircuts, hair color, hair treatments, scalp massage, body massages and more. For the women, they also offer haircuts, hair treatments, nail services and foot services.
They have a customized menu known as “style guide” which helps customers pick the type of hairdo that they want whether modern or classic to make it easier for them and the stylists to get their desired look.
