There’s an exciting addition to Limketkai Luxe hotel’s gym classes and it’s called – Step Aerobics. Perhaps you’ve heard of it since this form of exercise was popular during the 80’s and 90’s. We got the chance to learn more about it since we were able to interview the instructor, Mr. Juliet Galvez who shared her knowledge regarding the exercise with us. She even gave us a quick demo on how to go about the workout.
What is Step Aerobics?
Step Aerobics is a unique type of aerobic exercise because it requires stepping on a platform known as “the step” and this should be an elevated one. Participants of the exercise are taught steps on how to go about stepping up and down a square, rectangular or circular platform.
Some classes of step aerobics are combined with kickboxing, jump rope, funk aerobics and body sculpting. If you’ve played Dance Dance Revolution or In the Groove arcade games before, the concept is similar to step aerobics.
Some of the common moves of this exercise include; basic step, corner knee, repeater knee, t-step, over-the-top, lunges, v-step, straddle down, l-step, split step and I-step.
How it Started
Step Aerobics was developed in 1989 by Gin Miller. Gin had a knee injury and after consulting an orthopedic doctor, she was recommended a method to strengthen her knee muscles by stepping up and down a milk crate.
After following this routine, it gave her an idea to develop a step regimen now known as “step aerobics”.
Step Aerobics Target Areas and Health Benefits
This form of exercise targets your core muscles, stabilizes them when you’re stepping. It also quickly burns fat and gives you stronger abs.
One of the main targets of step aero is your legs because it works on your calves, quadriceps and hamstrings.
Other target areas of step aerobics are your buttocks and back since you’ll be using your lower back muscles with every step.
Through step aerobics, you’ll improve your flexibility, focus, coordination and overall body strength. Because of this workout, you’ll be able to maintain a healthy weight avoid joint pains and other health problems.
