Where will ASEAN 2017 take place? It’s going to be in Manila on April 26-29, 2017. ASEAN is the most dynamic sub-region in the most dynamic region (ASIA) in the world. The good thing about this is that the Philippines is well-positioned in the ASEAN.

Our county is one of the most progressive countries in the ASEAN, it has the youngest workforce and we comprise 60% of ASEAN’s population together with Indonesia and Vietnam.

Main reasons why Philipines is joining the FTA’s are following:

  • To remain competitive globally.
  • It wants to join in promoting cross-border complementation.
  • Maintain investment inflow.
  • To increase consumers’ benefits.

Through the AEC, Philippine businesses including Region 10 can do the following;

  • Invest in other ASEAN countries.
  • Bring in more investments from various ASEAN firms.
  • Practice direct import to other ASEAN countries.
  • Being part of the regional value chain thus can indirectly import to other ASEAN countries.
  • Connect with the growing domestic market and leverage economies of scale to be more competitive in ASEAN.

According to Mr. Irwin Jamaca, the ASEAN currently does not play a huge part in the world’s economy. It’s because each country is actually only 1% of the global economy. However, through the ASEAN initiative,  our country can end up being ranked 7th in the world economy. All we need to do is unite with other ASEAN countries, establish collaboration and support each other to attain the goal. Mr. Jamaca also mentioned what types of products have made it big in terms of exportation worldwide, he said that coffee beans, organic products and bamboo are highly in demand abroad.

A few moments later at the Talakayan discussion, he showed some success stories of Filipino entrepreneurs who have succeeded in exporting their products abroad and earned big from these transactions. It is very inspiring to know that several Philippine business have actually reached other parts of the world and other nations are patronizing their products.

Hopefully, the ASEAN Conference will open more doors for the Philippines especially in Northern Mindanao and serve as an avenue for our local products to be recognized worldwide thus helping boost our economy as well.
